The Pantanal is a unique and untouched swampland in West Brazil. Located within the watery lowlands, it is South America’s largest wildlife paradise that covers an area half the size of Germany.

The name Pantanal is derived from the Portuguese word ‘Pantano’ that means swamp or quagmire. In actual fact it is a marshland area.

More than six hundred and fifty bird species appreciate the tranquillity and nutritious abundance of this protected region that consists of savannah, forests, meadows and countless rivers and where most of the land is flooded during the rainy season.

The Pantaneiros ride through the land on their horses to tend to grazing livestock as this is the only practical means by which they can travel through the forests, open country and tropical marshland.

The Pantanal is a natural paradise within a watery wilderness in which the remarkable diversity of birdlife is almost without equal.
