Budapest is the capital of Hungary, the pearl of the Danube and an ever-changing cosmopolitan city.

High above the banks of the Danube is Buda’s Castle Hill with its imposing Castle Palace. In 1872, Buda with Pest, and Obuda, were united to form Hungary’s capital of Budapest.

Looking at the city’s layout and buildings, which were modelled on southern examples, it is difficult to believe that once the city’s inhabitants were forced to flee from the banks of the Danube due to attacking Mongol hordes. For them, Castle Hill was their only protection and the massive stone castle of King Bela The Fourth, their goal. Over time, it became the residence of the Hungarian monarchy.

Travelling by boat on the Danube through Budapest’s historic city districts is an atmospheric experience. It recalls the history of both city and country when Hungary was once a kingdom formerly ruled by the Turks who were followed by the Habsburgs and Maria Theresia who became Queen of Hungary.

The historic homes in Gozsdu-Hof have been fully restored. Close by is the Jewish quarter with the Great Synagogue, the second-largest synagogue in the world. In 1783, Joseph The Second enacted for the Jews the right of residence in Pest. Although the inner city was forbidden, they settled close to the centre.

Budapest, The Paris Of The East, is a harmonious mixture of the mediaeval idyll, Wilhelminian art nouveau style, vibrant life and romantic tranquillity, full of character and charm and a powerful symbol of Hungarian pride!
