Open to the public and set within a karstic landscape where the foothills of the Alps merge with the Pannonian Plain, is the largest and longest cave system in Slovenia, Postojnska Jama, a wonderland of nature that also features the longest underground cave train in the world.
In 1818, Luka Čeč discovered the first sections and, to date, more than twenty kilometres of cave passages have been explored. Of these, around five kilometres have been designated for general group visits.
The temperature in the cave system maintains a constant eight degrees Celsius and its paths and bridges are easy to negotiate.
In the nineteenth century Postojnska Jama was known throughout Europe and America and was visited by travellers, scientists and various monarchs. When in 1857 the railway line between Vienna and Trieste saw the opening of the Postojna Railway Station, cave tourism was born.
Postojnska Jama, a truly timeless destination!
