The Liwonde National Park is situated in Central Africa and is Malawi’s most well known game reserve.
Up until 1962 unrestricted poaching and hunting almost entirely eradicated the wildlife population of the region but in 1969 it was designated as a game reserve and, in 1973, as a national park.
The Shire River is the region’s lifeline and more than two thousand hippos inhabit a forty kilometre section of the park. The park’s elephants are no longer slaughtered for their valuable tusks and their numbers, too, are increasing substantially.
At the park’s watering holes groups of animals repeatedly gather to drink, an ideal opportunity to observe animals in the wild.
Thankfully, the Liwonde National Park is now a natural paradise once more.
