On Croatia’s Mediterranean-like coast, one of Dalmatia’s most beautiful cities is situated within a sheltered bay, the mediaeval city of Šibenik.

Sveti Jakov, the Holy Jakob Cathedral, was its architectural masterpiece and today the most important sacred Renaissance building in Dalmatia.

The oldest of the city’s three castle complexes has a magnificent view across the red tiled roofs of the old town. Where today a cemetery occupies this strategic location, this was once the defensive centre of the city until the fortress that was located here was destroyed by lightning.

From 1797 to 1918 Šibenik was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, interrupted by a short period of French occupation. Next, the Second World War, and then numerous warring factions.

Outside the remains of the double city walls and a Franciscan monastery church, is a small monastery garden, a tranquil place whose splendour captivates and reminds those who come here of the city’s long and dramatic history. Today it is a splendid mirror that reflects the city’s dramatic and colourful past.
