<p>Sveti Jakov, the Holy Jakob Cathedral, was its architectural masterpiece and today the most important sacred Renaissance building in Dalmatia.

<p>The oldest of the city’s three castle complexes has a magnificent view across the red tiled roofs of the old town.  Where today a cemetery occupies this strategic location, this was once the defensive centre of the city until the fortress that was located here was destroyed by lightning.

<p>From 1797 to 1918 Šibenik was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, interrupted by a short period of French occupation.  Next, the Second World War, and then numerous warring factions.

<p>Outside the remains of the double city walls and a Franciscan monastery church,  
is a small monastery garden, a tranquil place whose splendour captivates and reminds those who come here of the city’s long and dramatic history.  Today it is a splendid mirror that reflects the city’s dramatic and colourful past.
