Poreć is picturesquely situated on a peninsula in the north of Croatia‘s Istrian coast. At first glance it appears to be a typical holiday paradise visited by thousands of tourists each year but its Town Hall offers a hint of its historic past, the traditional style of Venetian Renaissance.

In 1267, Poreć, as Istria’s first city, was affiliated to the Serenissima and with the subsequent construction of palaces, squares and religious buildings, it soon took on a Venetian appearance which has remained until the present day.

The harbour’s traditional buildings date back to the time of the fall of Venice and when the city came under Austrian rule.

In Roman times the Old Town had an efficient road network. Poreć’s main street, Decumanus, divides various groups of buildings of dominant Gothic design. In 539 A.D. the city came under the rule of the Byzantines who founded a bishopric there in around about 800 A.D.

Between 539 A.D. and 553 A.D. Bishop Euphrasius had a basilica built on the foundations of several earlier buildings, an Early Byzantine masterpiece and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Poreć is a little gem with a great history and culture and even now, Pearl Of The Adriatic!
