A cruise on the Danube from Passau in Germany’s Upper Bavaria, to the Danube Delta on the Black Sea, is one of Europe’s most varied and adventurous tours: more than two thousand river kilometres full of history, nature and culture.
Our journey begins in the episcopal town of Passau which is the confluence of both the Inn and Ilz. No sooner had the town’s bishops been rewarded with princely power in 1217, that they ordered the construction of the well-fortified Veste Oberhaus on a ridge opposite the Old Town. The prosperity of Bavaria’s ‘Venice’ was due to its production of wine, grain and salt.
Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral is one of the most cherished buildings in Austria and also one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world. Within the cathedral the pulpit is an impressive sight and is where Master Anton Pilgram portrayed himself beneath the steps.
Leaving Vienna, the Danube flows through the Danube Floodplains National Park that extends to the Slovakian border, one of the last large floodplain landscapes in Central Europe with a remarkable variety of animal and plant species. Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and is a city with a long and colourful history. A huge fortress is the city’s largest historic building, with breathtaking views that evoke bygone days.
The river once again becomes a border this time between Romania and Bulgaria and is where the New Europe Bridge connects the two countries.
Royal cities, castles and cathedrals as well as unique, natural landscapes, have accompanied this remarkable river journey. The Danube Cruise is an unforgettable experience on the trail of history!
