The Grossglockner is the highest mountain in the Austrian Alps and is surrounded by three thousand metre high peaks.
The Grossglockner experience begins in Heilgenblut that is Austria's most beautiful mountain village and is one thousand three hundred metres above sea level.
When the Austrian Emperor and Empress first visited there were no roads and the main route across the Alps was altogether different. The Pasterze Glacier once reached to the Glockner and today, far down below, is the Margaritzen Reservoir. In 1932, the "Glacier Road" was built up to the summit where, in1856, to reach it the Imperial couple had to climb.
Today the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe has been fully developed. The view of the glacier landscape is one of the most remarkable in the whole of Austria and the Grossglockner towers above a fascinating world of eternal ice. When the Emperor and his entourage visited, the glacier was far larger.
Fuscher Lacke is a small lake that fills a gulley and was created during the melting of a glacier. The view is wild and romantic and the calm surface of the water majestically reflects the surrounding mountain world.
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is situated on one of the oldest north-south connections in the European Alps. It is an extraordinary experience with wildlife, beautifully dramatic scenery and, above all, adventure. It is most certainly the dream road of the Alps!
