Matsue Castle is located in the west of the main Japanese island of Honshue in the middle of the Sanin region. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, what was then a fishing village was transformed into a castle town from which the powerful Matsudaira Clan controlled the region. A small castle, which resembles a fortress, was built on the city’s hill, and served as a residence for the Matsudaira.
