The province of Carinthia in the south of Austria possesses an exceptional Alpine road that travels through a biosphere park, the Nockalm Road. This mountain road, tucked away neatly into the landscape, gradually reveals the high areas of the Nock Mountains.

The first stop is a picture-perfect location, the Priess Hut, the perfect starting point for numerous walks. Milk cows graze and visibly enjoy the lush mountain meadow grass with its many flowers and herbs. For more than seven hundred years farmers have been driving their cattle here in summer thus making a positive contribution to the appearance of this region.

In 1987 the Nock Mountains were designated as a national park and fifteen years later, a biosphere park.

Lake Windeben is a small mountain lake with a maximum depth of two metres and is located within a shallow cirque depression. Originally smaller, the lake was artificially enlarged by the mound of a dam and therefore the water level is also prone to strong fluctuations. In the southern section of the lake are two small islands surrounded by Marshland grass. In such protected wetlands a large number of plants thrive, which survive here alongside the animal world in alpine communities.

The Pfandl-Hut contains the animal show, Wild Nock Mountains, and is very popular with animal lovers. Here, dramatic territorial deer fights are shown, hunting stories told and the bird life of the Nock Mountains, presented.

Magnificent natural landscapes with mountain lakes, rustic huts and fascinating views, the Nockalm Road offers all of this, a journey through hundreds of millions of ongoing geological developments, a journey of both culture and nature.
