Our exploration of the Dieng Plateau, the geographical centre of the Indonesian island of Java, begins in Wonosobo. At an altitude of seven hundred and eighty metres, the "meeting place in the forest" welcomes us with a mild climate and since bygone times this peaceful place has been the gateway to the Dieng Plateau.

In the evening we begin our journey up to the volcanoes. In the darkness we take a break and from then the march to Sinukir Hill begins. A paved path leads past illuminated kitchen stalls. At the top, dawn gradually breaks through and a dream world becomes visible. Below, the morning fog, and, in between, the peaks of the surrounding volcanoes. The sight of the "seat of the gods" makes it easy to forget the rigours of the ascent.

Everyone is waiting for the sun to rise, the sight of which is one of the most beautiful and impressive in the world.

Candi Arjuna is the most visited temple ruin in the shallow swamp caldera of a volcano. Only eight of the once four hundred temples of this Hindu place of pilgrimage have survived. Simple elegance and modest ornamentation contrast with the splendour of Prambanan. For centuries Dieng has been a holy place, where today the preserved temple ruins stand lost in the often foggy landscape.

It is believed that the entire Dieng Plateau was once a caldera that was created during the collapse of a huge volcano.
