The high mountains of Austria’s Nockberge with its alpine pastures and dreamy log cabins have been designated as a biosphere park by UNESCO.

Numerous gentle bends lead up into the two thousand four hundred metre high Nockys which are among the highest grass mountains in Europe. The mountain peaks are dome-shaped and covered with green grass and their extraordinary appearance is considered to be a miracle of nature.

Lake Windeben is a small mountain lake with a maximum depth of two metres and is located within a shallow cirque depression. Originally smaller, the lake was artificially enlarged by the creation of a dam thus the water level is prone to strong fluctuations. In such protected wetlands a large number of plants thrive alongside the animal world in alpine communities.

Nestled between the Hohe Tauern and Karawanken mountains is Austria's oldest mountain range, the Carinthian Nocky Mountains which tower high above the valleys like green giants.

The Schiestl-Jag is the highest point of the Nockalm Road and is located at an altitude of two thousand metres. Fifty two hairpin bends travel up and down this impressive natural landscape, an exceptional work of road construction design inaugurated in 1981.

The Grund-Alp is located on the valley floor. From the road, a structure of ancient stone blocks is visible, the Silva Magica, a world of secrets and natural spirits.

The Nockalm Biosphere Park is one of the last natural paradises on earth and a treasure that is well worth preserving.
