Mallorca is the largest and most well known island of the Balearics in the western Mediterranean. A holiday paradise with a lot of sea, but also culture, nature and tradition, the city is a dream destination off the European mainland.
We begin our tour of the island in the capital Palma de Mallorca at the Parque de la Mar, in front of the city’s Old Town. The La Seu cathedral is one of the most sacred building in the world and the Mercat de L’Olivar, the largest and most famous market hall in the city.
Out of the city and into the countryside, in the mountain village of Estellencs, the houses on the western coast nestle against the steep slopes of the Puig de Galatzo.
Inland in the fertile valley of Esporles lies the former country estate La Granje. The magnificent interiors from different eras show the lifestyle of Mallorca’s old rural nobility.
At Valdemossa, probably the most visited village in Spain, the famous monastery was home to Polish composer Frédéric Chopin for a short while.
We board a nostalgia train heading northwest, bound for Sóller. Through the mountains, we pass Bunyola, a mountain village that gained its name through its wine-producing history and the tiny village of ORIENT, which attracts visitors with its beautiful mountain scenery and meadows.
Sóller is the capital of Tramuntana and offers markets with fresh fruit in abundance and a ride on the “Orange Express” tramway to the port, which has long since ceased to be the sleepy fishing village of bygone days.
We finish our trip in the villages along the Mallorcan coastline. Alcúdia in the bay of Pollença is the oldest settlement on the island, conquered by the Romans in 123 BC, shortly followed by the rest of the island. From 1300, scattered settlers gathered within the Capdepera’s protective walls, seeking refuge from pirate attacks.
Mallorca, the pearl of the Mediterranean. Impressive mountain scenery, romantic bays and lively cities, the magic of the “Island of Dreams“.
