The destination of this trip is the volcanic landscape in the east of the main Indonesian island of Java. Join us as we embark on a jeep ride to the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru national park, beginning in the village of Ngadas, through the volcanic mountain landscape.
The Coban Peland waterfall is our first stop. A hiking trail, surrounded by lush vegetation and magnificent local mountain flowers, leads down into a ravine, past cultivated vegetable fields and to the Love Bridge, at the foot of the waterfall.
Continuing on our way in the jeep through the mountains, we reach the entrance to the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru national park. The park is made up of the stratovolcano Semeru, as well as four volcanoes in the Tengger-Caldera, the Sea of Sand, four lakes and fifty rivers.
High up in the Tengger-Caldera, the slopes of the volcanoes are still covered in lush greenery. The Tengger crater is one of the largest in the world. On the descent into the caldera, at 2000 feet, the landscape becomes sparse and the ground is covered with fine volcanic sand; “The Sea of Sand”.
We spend the night at the mountain village of Cemoro Lawang at the edge of the crater, with a wonderful view of the caldera landscape complete with the smoking Bromo and other volcanoes.
The highlight of the trip is still to come the next morning: watching the sun rise above the Sea of Sands and the volcanic landscape. An almost supernatural play of colours on the horizon and the contours of the surrounding landscape come slowly into view. With the mystical atmosphere and the breath-taking light around the smoking Bromo volcano, this really an experience in paradise.
