Austria's newest national park has opened its doors. Mysterious and breathtakingly beautiful, the light limestone peaks of the Gesäuse National Park tower into the sky. Here, we will begin an enchanting journey through the natural wonder of the Gesäuse, with its breath-taking landscapes and wild river.
Along the way, we will discover the Enns River, 254 kilometres long and the country’s longest inland river, that breaks through the Northern Limestone Alps through a hidden valley between Admont and Hieflau. The surrounding limestone cliffs rise above and are popular with mountain climbers, as beautiful as they are dangerous.
We will discover the fascinating geology of the mountains, made up of limestone and dolomite, originating in the Triassic and Jurassic periods, as well as the biodiversity of the area’s flora and fauna. In the Johnsbach Valley, we see the industrial history of the area dating back to the 15th century, known for copper and logging.
Where in fair weather, experienced water sports athletes brave the white waters of the Enns, when it rains this is no longer possible as the Enns swells and floods and the Enns cataract shows the primal force of water. But after the rain, nature always awakens in all its splendour.
Here in Upper Styria, there is a unique landscape that has emerged as the earth has evolved. The Gesäuse is a monument of nature, a natural spectacle and a real wonder of the natural world.
