Matera, the cave city in the southern Italian region Basilikata is an extraordinary and impressive place, one which is unique in Europe.

People lived here for centuries, until about 20,000 were resettled in the 1950s. What remained was an abandoned ruined town until it was rediscovered by tourism. Today Matera alone has become a true Cult entity, and also world famous through films - and in 2019 became the European Capital of Culture
