The Berner Oberland-Railway, the only way for tourists to approach the magnificent mountain landscape of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau without problems, runs the first stage from the Swiss town of Interlaken to Widerswil.

The Wengeneralp-Railway was ready and opened in 1893. It connects Wengen with Lauterbrunnen in the valley, but also serve as a shuttle to the Kleine Scheidegg. This station was built at 2.061 metres above sea level, and is where visitors have to change trains to continue their adventure.

From here the famous Jungfraujoch-Railway begins, a rack railway to the highest railway station in Europe. In 1912 the bold engineering project was completed, and corridors and rooms were cut into the mountain top. This is the high mountain world of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Those world-famous mountains, which also became famous through mountaineering tragedies.

The stay on the Jungfraujoch is strictly limited by time, as every visitor must reach his designated train for the return journey. At the transfer station you can decide whether to go down to Wengen or to Grindelwald, with a view of the Lauberhorn and in the shadow of the notorious north face of the Eiger.

The further down the train approaches the "Valley of the Black Lütschine", the more the snow and ice fields disappear and give way to the lush green of the mountain meadows. Grindelwald is reached at 1.090 metres above sea level. Again it’s necessary to change to the Berner Oberland-Railway, which runs back to Interlaken along the Black Luthine.

Today the mighty Jungfraujoch can be conquered in just one day by train.
