Today, Lake Brienz is a mountain lake with a length of 14 kilometres and a width of 2.5 kilometres, and was only separated from Lake Thun by the silted area around Interlaken, which is considered the cradle of Swiss Alpine tourism.

The river Aare connects the two lakes and so the journey to Lake Brienz begins at the river station in Interlaken-East. Böningen is the first village on the southern, rather undeveloped bank. The steamboat calls at several villages and thus repeatedly connects both shores of the lake.

From the boat station "Giessbach Lake" one of the oldest funiculars in Europe leads up to the Grand Hotel, which is located directly at the waterfalls.

Brienz is the centre of Swiss woodcarving art. Right next to the port is also the small train station from where a breathtaking ride on the rack railway takes you up to the Brienzer Rothorn. Brienz has been settled by the Alemanni since the 7th century and, after an eventful history, is part of the canton of BERN, something the inhabitants are proud of.

Finally, we visit the nearby open-air museum Ballenberg. Far more than 100 buildings document the diversity of Alpine culture.

Thus we end the tour on Lake Brienz with proud the cultural history of the Swiss Confederates.
