Mighty walls protect the Romanian city of Sibiu, formerly known as Hermannstadt, which was named European Capital of Culture in 2007.

The "Transylvanian Saxons" cultivated the land in the Carpathian curve, built villages and towns, survived the attacks of the Ottomans and brought about, flourishing economy, trade and culture. And so, three ring walls, wooden battlements, bastions and several defence towers were built.

On the way to the centre there is the Orthodox Cathedral, which was only built from 1902 on at the seat of the Metropolie of the Romanian Orthodox Church in only four years.

The old city was founded in the early Middle Ages by German colonists, and was granted the right to mint by King Andreas the Second.

Alongside the Protestant Parish Church, HUET- Square seems too small and bell tower and pointed roofs shape the silhouette of the city.

In the Lower Town the craftsmen and soldiers from the Habsburg Empire were resident. Framed by splendid houses of the guilds, the Upper Town continues at the "Bridge of Lies".

Sibiu is rightly a place of world culture and a meeting place of religions.
