Hidden in a side valley of the Indus, in the very north of India, is the monastery of Hemis. On the tenth day in the fifth month of the Tibetan calendar, the "Tsetschu" festival is celebrated here in honour of Padmasambhava. He is also called "Guru Rimpoche" - the esteemed teacher. For the festivities his picture is hung on the facade of the monastery, because it was he who had spread the teachings of Buddha in Ladakh and Western Tibet in the eighth century. ..

Hemis is one of the richest monasteries in Ladakh, because it owns land in many villages and the farmers who lease these fields have to give a quarter of their harvests to the monastery as interest, so it can raise the funds it needs to organize such a festival.
