Leh is the capital of Ladakh, a region in the far north of India, and was an important base along the Silk Road. In 1962, when I visited India for the first time, Leh was only accessible by a two-week walk. The city was then still completely in the Middle Ages, with no roads, no electricity and running water was only available in the stream. Nowadays the population is 7,000 in winter and grows to 35,000 in summer. This increase is not only caused by the tourists, because there are also many business people, craftsmen, monks from distant monasteries and especially all kinds of seasonal workers.....
