Perast is located opposite the Verige strait at the point where Risan Bay merges into the Kotor basin. The town was first referred to in documents in the 14th century as Perastium and later came under Venetian and then Austrian administration and is one of the most visited places in Montenegro and today stands as a national monument on its own.

Perast seems like a quiet and sleepy place today, but glorious days rich in history lie behind the facades of the few houses.

At first, the city's affairs were strongly linked to Kotor, and it was not until the 16th century that Perast became independent, and a great defender against the Turks.

Built in 1691, the church's baroque campanile is at 55 metre the tallest and certainly the most beautiful in the entire bay.

The basis for the wealth, however, was not only trade and shipping but also numerous customs privileges as a reward for battles and the fight against pirates.

Two islands lie in front of the town, Gospa Od Škrpjela, created from landfill, and the island of Sveti Dorde.

The real island of Sveti Dorde next door is also considered a place of pilgrimage, which lead Perast to become a World Heritage Site.
