The charming port town on Montenegro's Adria coast is a place rooted in history.
Illyrians, Greeks and Romans occupied the city, then followed the Venetian period and the Austro-Hungarian rule. Until 2003 Budva belonged to Yugoslavia, followed by a confederation of Serbia-Montenegro and in 2006 Montenegro became independent.
Two city gates gave access to the old town, one from the land, and one from the seashore. The oldest Catholic church in Budva, Santa Maria in Punta, dates back to the year 840. The old town was practically quite destroyed in an earthquake, but the medieval appearance was since successfully restored.
The city wall surrounds the small island town, where all the dwellings and churches had to find their sheltered haven in a very confined area.
According to ancient mythology Budva was founded by Kadmos over 2,500 years ago. Kadmos was the son of the Greek-Phoenician king Agenor, who was the son of Poseidon and Libya, and perhaps also the father of Europe! Budva has become an international tourist destination, due to not only to a long beach just outside the old town gates, but also secluded rocks
