For many years Monument Valley and its distinctive mesas in the northern part of Arizona have become one of the most famous natural landmarks in the United States.
The region was populated many thousands of years ago by the Native American Indians and there are traces of the Anasazi Tribe, an ancient and once highly developed culture.
The characteristic colour of the terrain is mainly to due to ferrous oxide and occasionally black veins of manganese oxide can also be seen in the rock. However, Monument Valley’s main feature is the stunning beauty of its various spectacular rock needles and towers.
For the local Navajo Indians the gigantic columns mean more than just picturesque scenery as they have a close and sacred relationship with the landscape of their forefathers. Thus Monument Valley is much more than a world famous nature park: the region is also greatly valued as a colourful focal point of ancient Native American Indian culture and tradition.
