Swamps, countless canals and natural watercourses are typical of the rugged landscape of Cuba’s Cienaga De Zapata Peninsula. The Montemar Nature Park that is located in the southern part of the Cuban province of Matanzas is regarded to be one of the largest wetlands in the entire Caribbean.

Prior to the Cuban Revolution the area was owned by ten powerful entrepreneurs. At that time, woodcutters, charcoal-burners and crocodile hunters worked within its mangrove forests.

Of the park’s one hundred and eighty varieties of bird, twenty-three are endemic and due to their large numbers they are relatively easy to observe.

The landscape of the Salinas is totally different from the Matanzas. In this savannah-like environment the vegetation is quite scant, the earth arid and cracked.

Approximately three hundred and forty-two varieties of bird have been recorded in Cuba and the majority inhabit the Zapata Peninsula.

With its abundance of natural splendour the Cienaga De Zapata in the heart of Cuba is like a beautiful work of art created by Nature.
