Framed by the picturesque Wasatch and Uninta Mountains is one of the most unique lakes in the world, the Great Salt Lake in North America, that is located north west of Salt Lake City.

The water has a high salt content and few creatures are able to survive within its waters. However, numerous rare species of water fowl can be found along its banks. Salt water shrimp and brine shrimp are the staple diet of the birdlife that inhabits the Great Salt Lake and it is only in the tributaries of the lake that fish are to be found.

Due to the loss of its natural outflows the Great Salt Lake lost its water by evaporation thus creating its saltiness. The lake’s four tributaries carried various minerals from the surrounding mountains into the lake and its salt content further increased.

Depending on the water level the salt content in some sections of the lake can reach up to twenty seven per cent and only the Dead Sea contains more salt.

The Great Salt Lake is a remarkable and unique lake and its origin and unusual beauty make it a true miracle of nature!
