Akakus is an enchanting world of sand and stone, a fairy-tale like natural area in the south west of Libya. Although the journey can be quite demanding, it is well worthwhile as it leads into a little known world that is full of remarkable beauty.
The Guelta Taschunt is a wadi that is known for a very narrow canyon that can only be entered on foot. Today the mighty rocks and endless desert landscape form a natural border between Libya and neighbouring Algeria.
Today around thirteen hundred members of the Tuareg, a nomadic Berber tribe, inhabit this region and it was here in 1850 that a German archaeologist discovered prehistoric remains as well as rock paintings, proof of an ancient culture.
The desert mountains of Akakus are far more than just a fascinating landscape. The rocks in its dried out river valleys are like an historic picture book that provides us with a remarkable insight into what was once a magnificent Saharan culture.
